1. Shipowner Eligibility

There are no requirements concerning local ownership or participation in ownership. All types of conventional and non-conventional vessels can be registered in the name of legally represented person, corporate bodies or entities.

No minimum tonnage is required for registration. However, vessels over 25 years maybe pass a special inspection by an authorized Recognized Organization to conduct inspection on behalf of the Tanzania Zanzibar International Register of Shipping in order to obtain provisional/permanent registration.

In accordance with The Registration of Maritime Transport Act 2006, a provisional registration is valid for three months and can be extended for another 3 months. During this time, the ship owner or his representative is expected to gather all documents necessary for permanent registration.
